Relax During Peace and Tranquility Week
Take a deep breath—it’s UK Peace and Tranquillity Week Sept. 7-13 in Durham. Celebrate the art of relaxation throughout County Durham, which a national tranquillity map compiled by the Campaign to Protect Rural England identified as the fourth-most relaxing place in Britain; North East England was the UK’s most relaxing region. Most of the week’s 18 events are free, ranging from castle tours and Indian head massage to tai chi classes and string quartet concerts.
Don’t miss the chance to take a baby owl on a woodland walk at the Beamish Wild Bird of Prey Conservation Centre, or to see Crook Hall and Gardens lit by 1,000 candles and open for strolls through the maze, orchards and medieval manor house—well worth the small fee. Visitors are invited to bring candle lanterns to launch into the night skies as harmony group Scherzo sings in the gardens. Special hotel and B&B discounts here.
